Sunset at Rocky Butte

In northeast Portland, there is a nice viewpoint in the middle of Rocky Butte Natural Area. The park covers the remains of an extinct volcano and gives you — on clear days — a nice view of several more volcanoes, both extinct (e.g., Mount Tabor, Pilot Butte, etc.) and active (e.g., Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens). And just to baffle everyone, the center of the park — where the viewpoint is — is named Joseph Wood Hill Park. No, the hill is not named after someone named Joesph Wood. It is Rocky Butte (though it used to be called Wiberg Butte). And Mr. Hill once ran a school located on the hill. Confused? Welcome to Portland naming!
Anyway, it is often a lovely spot to catch a sunset if you are nearby, as I was for these shots. And be on the lookout of airplanes, and for me on this day wayward party balloons.

Nice person in Portland, Oregon, and beyond.
