Wandering New Orleans

The great city of New Orleans is often an absurd, even surreal place, bordered by the massive Mississippi River on one side (as it winds its lumbering way to the Gulf of Mexico to the south), and on the other by Lake Pontchartrain (brackish and about 40 miles wide). Who would have thought this is a good spot to live? But it is, and further it can be one of the most interesting, fun, and yes, even heartbreaking locations on earth, certainly in the United States. During my visit in March 2018, I had some time to wander through such disparate neighborhoods as the French Quarter, the Ninth and Lower Ninth Wards, the Bywater, the Garden District and Lower Garden District, and more. I purposefully only brought my 50mm 1.4 lens to give myself a challenge. Here are some general shots from that wandering.

Apache Trail Highway, Arizona Route 88

Cutting through the rugged Superstition Mountains from the towns of Apache Junction and Tortilla Flat to Roosevelt Lake, Arizona's Route 88 -- a.k.a the Apache Trail Highway -- is a gorgeous ride with endless spots of oohs and ahhs. Unfortunately, it is also one of the worst, most treacherous roads I've driven in all the United States. It winds its way around cliffside after cliffside on a pothole-infested, one-lane road that somehow is declared suitable for two lanes. And those two lanes are filled with large pickups pulling boats to the various recreational spots in the area. But if you survive, it's hard to mind a slow ride through unspoiled southwestern desert wilderness. If you're going, the best vehicle to take is a small car with good shocks. (And air conditioning!)

Wandering in Adıyaman, Turkey

Not far from the timeless glory of Mount Nemrut in southern Turkey is the modern city of Adıyaman. We got to wander for a few hours there through their markets and parks, including stumbling upon a card game. Then it was off to Nemrut....
