Grove of the Patriarchs
Directly east of the Stevens Canyon entrance to Mount Rainier National Park (on the southeast corner of the park), you can find the Grove of the Patriarchs trail. About a mile long, the trail is mostly an easy, relaxing stroll… with one exception: a fabulously wobbly suspension bridge, which shakes you like an amusement park ride as you cross. Kids will love that. At the heart of the trail you are on a boardwalk loop on an island on the Ohanapecosh River taking in the sights and sounds of the wilderness. Many of the trees there have been protected for centuries from forest fires and similar calamities and so have been able to grow to enormous heights and ages. A tree-lover’s heaven! Good thing I am a tree lover…
We visited during my “Trail of Trails” tour of Pierce County in September 2021.
