Opening Day at the AC Hotel Portland

I was invited to the opening of the new AC Hotel in downtown Portland, Oregon. They built it in what was a funny old vacant lot that everyone just used as a shortcut at a busy intersection. Now it's a charming place to stay steps away from the Pioneer Place shopping mall and other downtown attractions. The best part of it for me, hands down, is they have a bunch of local artwork and local food and drinks...

Camassia Natural Area, West Linn, Oregon

About 26 wooded acres nestled on a ridge overlooking Oregon City.  There are wetlands and oak groves, with the whole area sprinkled with large erratics (rocks brought here by ancient ice-age floods)...

Neon Fun in Oregon City

I came upon a fun old neon sign in Oregon City, Oregon, recently. It was too good not to grab some close-up shots of it with my 100mm lens.

Eve Connell

Portland, Oregon, is full of great creative people. Singer Eve Connell is one of them. In February 2017 we shot together at Sellwood Riverfront Park in southeast Portland. With her charm and fearlessness, she's like our town's own Mary Tyler Moore. It was fun to capture some of that spirit.

Tulips in My Kitchen

The best part of late winter is tulips begin appearing. They are one of my favorite flowers, though they aren't around for as long as I'd like them to be. (Roses, for instance, can hang around this area for half the year.) But because of that tulips symbolize the return of spring to me. New life is here, and many other flowers will soon appear as well. Oh, and the amazing Wooden Shoe tulip farm will soon open. Can't wait for that!

Opal Creek and Jawbone Flats, Oregon

In January 2015 I explored Opal Creek and the quasi-ghost town of Jawbone Flats (population 5) in the central Cascade Mountains in Oregon. The area is thick with gorgeous fir trees, and the water in the creeks and rivers is crystal clear.  It's so clear in fact that when it pools, it looks insanely, surreally blue...

A Week with a 2017 Prius Prime

For a week this February, the good folks at Toyota USA let me have a brand new 2017 Prius Prime, the plug-in hybrid atop of the Prius line. What's the difference between it and a regular Prius? Well, I drove the wheels off it and didn't use a drop of gasoline. Instead I was able to recharge the batteries via any standard electrical outlet. Pretty awesome. I love though that it still has a gas tank for a back-up in case I had found myself somewhere without outlets. To me, that is a big plus over a typical electric car...

Nate Bowman, Welder

Professional welder Nate Bowman and I shot together by Portland's Broadway Bridge in January 2017. It had been a long time since I was able to shoot some welding, so it was great fun to re-learn the basics of getting good shots with that much variation of light. Can't wait for the next opportunity to shoot with him! What's more fun that sparks of fire? Not much...
