Reykjavík: Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Center
On the afternoon of the first day in Iceland, we explored the spectacularly honeycombed Harpa concert hall and conference center. A wonderfully audacious building! And inside we went to the Björk Digital virtual reality exhibition, which itself is wonderfully audacious, with Björk pushing the envelope for the music video art form into 360 degrees...
Reykjavík: Day One Wandering
In November 2016 Canopy by Hilton flew me to Iceland for the opening celebration of their first hotel, the Reykjavík City Centre. If you're ever in Iceland, you should try to stay there. The location and facilities are both excellent...
Juneau: Norris Glacier Helicopter and Dogsled Tour
Just east of Juneau, Alaska, along Taku Inlet are a series of mighty glaciers. Era Flightseeing took me atop one, the Norris, via helicopter; once there dogsleds took me around the awe-inspiring glacial world. The folks at Era could not have been nicer or more professional; I never felt unsafe, but we still had a blast! I definitely recommend taking a trip with them...
Treadwell Mine, Douglas, Alaska
On the edge of downtown Douglas, Alaska, in a lush forest with a serene, rocky beach, you can find the remains of the Treadwell gold mine. What once was a thriving hub of miners, horses, and donkeys, is now a lovely hiking trail in which you come across strange metal pipes and machine pieces, concrete walls, and glory holes...
Venice, Day 7 Wandering with Lorenzo Cinotti
On day 7 of my Venetian adventures in December 2015, I had a great time wandering about with my friend Lorenzo Cinotti. The city was blanketed off and on with a light fog that gave a nice glow to everything we shot...
Venice, Day 6: Wandering
In December 2015 I visited Venice, Italy, for the fourth time. It's one of my very favorite places on Earth. I'll never get enough of it. Below are photos from my sixth day's wanderings...
Philadelphia and an iPhone
Last week I went to Philadelphia for a conference. I didn't have a ton of time to shoot, but I did manage to have a little fun with my iPhone as I traveled from place to place in town. I believe no shots are edited except the man sitting by the reflecting pool, which got a bit of VSCO editing on my phone...
Venice, Hotel Danieli
Near my apartment in Venice (where I visited in December 2015) stands a wonderful five-star hotel, the Danieli. Its rooftop restaurant looks out on both the Palazzo Ducalo and San Giorgio Maggiore. Impressive. The whole place has a great vibe of an old Venetian palazzo combined with a modern hotel. Sitting at the bar, sipping my gin & tonic, I felt like I was in a scene from a James Bond film. Turns out they filmed part of Moonraker here...
Venice, Palazzo Ducale
If there is a more breathtaking view than walking out of the ticket area into the Palazzo Ducale courtyard just off of the Piazza San Marco, then... I will eat (a delicious piece of cake in the shape of) my hat. The Doge's Palace is often overrun with tourists, but with good reason: it is truly a must-see destination. It's a glorious mix of late-medieval and renaissance architectures in ways that only Venice could devise.
Venice, Day 3: San Giorgio Maggiore
Venice is full of countless incredible buildings, but one of the best is Palladio's San Giorgio Maggiore church. Neoclassical brilliance. On the third day of my December 2015 Venetian trip I took a boat out to San Gio and went atop the bell tower. So gorgeous...
